Getting Around

Fly into Mykonos direct from most of Europe, or arrive by ferry from Athens. The island is best driven, and a car with a driver is worth arranging before you land in August.

Inside Mykonos

Choose the beach before you choose the house. Psarou and Agios Lazaros are the exclusive south-coast pair: calm water, and the shortest walk to the loudest names. Ornos and Platis Gialos are the family side, sheltered and shallow and close to town, and Platis Gialos is the water-taxi hub for everywhere else. Elia gives you the longest sand on the island with room between the loungers. Kalafatis and the east coast are quieter and breezier, built for windsurfing and for sleeping. Panormos and the north are wilder and more stylish, with a meltemi wind that arrives without asking. Super Paradise runs from lunch to sunrise. Chora is the one place you can leave the car behind.

When is the best time to visit Mykonos?

Late May to early October. July and August are the peak and the busiest. June and September give you the same sea and the same sun with far more room, and better rates.

Do I need a car on Mykonos?

On most of the island, yes. The beaches are spread along a wide coastline and taxis are scarce in season. In Chora you do not: the centre is closed to cars and everything is a short walk.

How far ahead should I book a villa in Mykonos?

For July and August, several months. The best houses on Psarou and Elia are committed by early spring, and the north coast follows not long after.
