Light vs Midsize vs Heavy Jets (and the Gulfstream G650): Choosing a Charter Category

By Villoura Editorial October 14, 2026 3 min read

Choosing a private jet starts with category. The right one depends on how many people are flying, how much luggage you bring, how far you’re going and how much cabin space you want.

Light jets

Typically seat about 4 to 7 passengers, with range suited to regional trips of roughly two to three hours. Cabins are compact, and baggage space is limited. Good for short hops with small groups.

Midsize and super-midsize jets

Midsize jets usually seat about 6 to 8 with more headroom and baggage space. Super-midsize jets add stand-up cabins in many models and the range to fly coast to coast nonstop in many cases. A strong choice for cross-country trips with a family or small group.

Heavy and long-range jets

Heavy jets seat about 10 to 16 or more, with separate cabin zones, full galleys and large baggage holds. Long-range models fly intercontinental routes nonstop.

The Gulfstream G650

The G650 and G650ER are among the best-known ultra-long-range jets, with a wide cabin, multiple living areas and range for routes such as the U.S. to Europe nonstop. They sit at the top of the price range, so they make most sense for long flights or when cabin space matters most.

For a trip like Los Angeles to Miami, super-midsize or heavy jets usually fly nonstop, while midsize jets may need a fuel stop. Our guide to flying private to Miami covers airports and times.

How to choose

  • Count passengers and bags honestly, including golf clubs or strollers.
  • Check whether you need nonstop range.
  • Decide how much cabin comfort matters for the flight length.
  • Compare all-in quotes across categories.
