Where Families Stay for Medical Care in Miami: Private Residences Near Mount Sinai, Baptist Health, UHealth and Nicklaus Children’s

By Villoura Editorial October 21, 2026 11 min read

Where a family should stay for medical care in Miami depends on which hospital. Mount Sinai Medical Center sits on the Miami Beach barrier island, so the answer there is Mid-Beach, the Sunset Islands or Bal Harbour. Baptist Hospital of Miami and its cancer institute are in Kendall, which points to Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Coconut Grove. UHealth, Sylvester, Bascom Palmer, Jackson Memorial and Nicklaus Children’s are reached fastest from Coconut Grove, Coral Gables or Brickell.

This is a guide to the accommodation side of a treatment trip, not to the treatment. It covers the consultation visit of three to ten nights, the longer stay of a month to six months, and the rental rules that decide what can legally be booked where. Medical questions belong with the hospital; this is about where everyone sleeps, cooks and waits.

Start with the hospital, then measure in minutes

Miami’s medical geography falls into three clusters, close on a map. What matters is the drive at 7.30 in the morning, when a patient has a fasting appointment and the causeways are full. A residence four miles away across the Julia Tuttle Causeway can be a longer journey than one twelve miles down US-1 against the traffic, so for every property we suggest to a family travelling for care, we quote the drive to the hospital entrance at the relevant hour.

The causeways decide more about a treatment stay than mileage does. Mount Sinai is on the island; almost everything else is on the mainland.

The first cluster is Mount Sinai Medical Center at 4300 Alton Road, the barrier island’s hospital. The second is the Baptist Health campus at 8900 North Kendall Drive, home to Baptist Hospital of Miami and the cancer institute that Baptist Health announced on May 20, 2026 would be renamed the Baptist Health Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute, formerly Miami Cancer Institute. The third is the Health District northwest of downtown, where UHealth Tower (1400 NW 12th Avenue), Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (1475 NW 12th Avenue), Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (900 NW 17th Street) and Jackson Memorial share a few blocks. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, at 3100 SW 62nd Avenue, sits apart between Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.

Cleveland Clinic Florida’s Weston Hospital, at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Boulevard, lies in Broward County, 45 minutes or more from Brickell, and deserves its own base.

Mount Sinai Medical Center: base in Mid-Beach, the Sunset Islands or Bal Harbour

Mount Sinai’s campus faces Biscayne Bay at the 41st Street end of Miami Beach, and the natural bases are all on the island. Mid-Beach, the residential streets between 41st and 63rd, puts a residence five to ten minutes from the entrance with no causeway in between. The Sunset Islands, four gated islands off Sunset Drive, are closer still and quieter. Bal Harbour, twenty minutes north on Collins Avenue, suits a longer stay.

Aerial view of the Sunset Islands and Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach
The Sunset Islands are minutes from Mount Sinai’s Alton Road campus, but single-family homes rent only for six months and a day or more.

The complication is the law. Miami Beach prohibits rentals of under six months and a day in all single-family homes, with fines up to $1,000 a day and $5,000 for repeat violations, so for a three-night consultation or a six-week recovery a Sunset Islands villa is not a legal option. Two kinds of property remain: condominium residences along Collins Avenue and in Bal Harbour, where the association permits stays of 30 nights or more, and, for a stay that runs past six months, the island’s houses on a bona fide written lease.

Mount Sinai’s International Center publishes what it can arrange for patients from abroad: 24-hour interpretation in more than 30 languages, letters for travel visas, short- and long-term lodging options, hospital transport and cost estimates for self-paying patients, according to the hospital’s international patients page. Hospital lodging assistance generally means hotel rates.

Baptist Hospital and the Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute: Coral Gables, Pinecrest and Coconut Grove

Baptist Hospital of Miami is the flagship of Baptist Health South Florida, and the Kendall campus also holds its cardiac and neuroscience institutes. The hospital’s own page describes it as a destination for patients from the Caribbean and Latin America, and the suburban campus has ample parking.

Mediterranean Revival architecture in Coral Gables
Coral Gables is fifteen minutes from the Baptist campus by US-1, and its homes rent only on leases of six months or more.

Pinecrest is closest, a leafy single-family neighbourhood a few minutes south along Old Cutler Road. Coral Gables is fifteen minutes north by US-1, with the Biltmore and Miracle Mile for the hours between appointments. Coconut Grove, twenty minutes away, has a walkable village centre and good groceries; our guide to Coconut Grove for families and long stays covers the streets in detail.

Coral Gables, like Miami Beach, does not permit rentals of less than six months, a point the city restated in a reminder on August 12, 2026. For the three-to-ten-night consultation, that leaves Coconut Grove, where Villoura holds licensed short-stay residences inside the City of Miami, and the hotels around Dadeland. For the month-to-six-month stay, a furnished Grove residence on 30-night-plus terms is the straightforward route; a Gables or Pinecrest house becomes possible once the stay crosses six months on a written lease.

Planning a luxury California stay?

Skip the guesswork. Villoura specialists match you to the right villa and handle every detail, a real person replies in minutes.

Baptist Health International publishes a different model: in-country managers across Latin America and the Caribbean who work with patients before travel, multilingual coordinators in Miami, and negotiated hotel and car-rental rates, including at the Hilton Miami Dadeland. Its page says nothing about visa letters or cost estimates, so families should ask.

UHealth, Sylvester, Bascom Palmer, Jackson and Nicklaus Children’s: Coconut Grove, Coral Gables or Brickell

UHealth announced on September 24, 2026 that U.S. News & World Report had ranked Bascom Palmer Eye Institute first in the nation for ophthalmology for the 25th year in its 2026–27 Best Hospitals list, and Sylvester, South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centre, first in Florida for cancer care, according to the health system’s announcement. Jackson Memorial stands next door.

The Brickell skyline at dusk seen across Biscayne Bay
Brickell is ten minutes from the Health District and the most practical base for a short consultation with a 30-night condo minimum.

For a short consultation, Brickell is the pragmatic base: ten minutes from the Health District, with building concierges, garages and elevators as standard. Bascom Palmer’s own accommodation page lists nearby hotels; a family wanting more room will find Brickell’s larger residences on 30-night terms, the shortest period the City of Miami allows outside licensed lodging use.

For a longer stay, and for anything involving Nicklaus Children’s, we steer families to Coconut Grove or Coral Gables, ten to twelve minutes from the children’s hospital and twenty to twenty-five from the Health District. A child in treatment needs a house with a garden more than a tower with a view, and siblings need somewhere to be children. The hospital’s international patient services page lists staff speaking eight languages including Spanish, Portuguese and Creole, a 24-hour interpretation line, help finding accommodation from hotels to long-term condo rentals, and cost estimates for uninsured families.

What a recovery-ready residence needs

The brief for a treatment stay differs from a holiday brief, and the differences are physical. The first is level access: a single-storey house, an elevator building, or at minimum a ground-floor principal suite with a step-free bathroom. A split-level Grove house with bedrooms upstairs is a fine family home and a poor recovery one. The second is a separate suite, with its own door and bathroom, for whoever is doing the caring, whether a spouse or a visiting nurse the family has engaged.

Level, light-filled living space in a Villoura residence
Level access, a quiet garden and a second suite for a caregiver are the first things we check for a treatment stay.

Then the kitchen. Many treatment protocols come with dietary instructions, and a family cooking to them for eight weeks needs a real kitchen and a nearby grocer. Where a family prefers not to cook, Villoura’s concierge arranges a private chef who cooks to the written requirements the family provides; we do not interpret those requirements, we make sure they are followed. Quiet comes next, and it rules out a surprising amount of Miami.

A private pool is one of the pleasures of a Miami house, and families often ask about it in connection with recovery. Whether a pool has any place in a patient’s rehabilitation is a question for the treating clinician alone. What we can say is that a heated, shaded pool with wide steps and a handrail is a different proposition from a deep plunge pool with a ladder, and we will tell you which a house has.

Hotel or private residence: the arithmetic of a family of four

For a three-night consultation, a good hotel near the hospital is often the right answer. The calculation changes with a family of four and a calendar measured in weeks. Two hotel rooms for six weeks means forty-two nights of breakfasts out, no kitchen for dietary needs, and siblings sharing with a parent who is up at night. A residence gives each person a door, a washing machine, a table for schoolwork and a garden, at a single nightly rate.

A hotel is designed to be left; a house is designed to be lived in. Our furnished 30-night-plus residences in Miami were built for this length of stay, with housekeeping, linens, utilities and internet handled so the family manages nothing but the appointments. We made the same case in our Los Angeles guide to staying near Cedars-Sinai, and the arithmetic is identical.

Miami’s rental rules, read before you book

Miami is a patchwork of municipalities, and a family under stress should not learn the rules from a cancelled booking. Miami Beach, as noted, bars rentals under six months and a day in all single-family homes; condominiums follow association rules, and some allow 30-night stays. The City of Miami, which includes Brickell, Coconut Grove and the Health District, classes any stay under 30 nights as lodging use requiring licensing, which Villoura’s short-stay residences hold. Coral Gables permits no rentals under six months.

Coconut Grove towers above the tree canopy, Miami
Coconut Grove sits inside the City of Miami, where under-30-night stays require lodging licensing that Villoura’s residences carry.

Surfside, between Mid-Beach and Bal Harbour, permits short-term rentals of one day to six months with registration, a quietly useful address for a Mount Sinai stay. Sunny Isles Beach requires a licence for single-family rentals under six months. Key Biscayne has been reported to apply a fifteen-day minimum, a figure we have not verified against the code. Our guide to Miami’s rental rules is kept current.

Two points affect the budget. Florida’s Department of Revenue treats rentals of six months or less as taxable transient accommodation, and Miami-Dade’s combined transient taxes run to roughly 13 to 14 percent; a bona fide written lease of more than six months is exempt. Condominium associations may screen tenants, with the fee capped by Florida law at $150 and the deposit at one month’s rent, and screening can take weeks, so start early.

Arriving: Miami International, Opa-locka and the international patient desks

Miami International Airport handled 55.3 million passengers in 2025 across 172 nonstop destinations, the second-busiest international gateway in the United States, which is why so many Latin American and Caribbean families treat Miami as their hospital city. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau’s healthcare guide describes patients arriving from Latin America and the Caribbean, much of it under three hours’ flying time. The airport is fifteen to twenty-five minutes from the mainland bases and thirty to forty from Mid-Beach. For private aviation timings from Los Angeles and New York, see our guide to flying private into Miami’s airports.

Families arriving by private aircraft generally use Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport, whose main runway is 8,002 feet, with U.S. Customs from 9 a.m. to midnight and a drive of about 35 minutes to downtown. Villoura’s concierge arranges the driver from either airport and the daily hospital transfers.

Every institution above runs an international patient office, and it should be the family’s first call after the referral. What those desks do not do is find a quiet single-level house with a second suite twelve minutes from the entrance. That is the half of the trip we handle, and the two halves work best arranged in the same week.

Frequently asked questions

Where should we stay for treatment at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach?

Mid-Beach, the Sunset Islands or Bal Harbour, all on the island side of the causeways, with Surfside a useful address between the last two. For stays under six months and a day, Miami Beach permits only condominium residences whose associations allow it, usually on a 30-night minimum; single-family homes require a lease of six months and a day or longer.

What is the best area to stay near Baptist Hospital of Miami and the Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute?

Pinecrest is closest, Coral Gables fifteen minutes north and Coconut Grove about twenty. Coral Gables does not permit rentals under six months, so for a consultation or a stay of one to five months the practical bases are Coconut Grove, where Villoura holds licensed short-stay and 30-night-plus residences, or a Dadeland hotel.

Where do families stay near Nicklaus Children’s Hospital?

Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, ten to twelve minutes from the hospital at 3100 SW 62nd Avenue, with gardens and quiet streets for siblings. The hospital’s Global Health team publishes help finding accommodation, multilingual staff and a 24-hour interpretation line. For a month or more, a furnished Grove residence usually suits a family better than a hotel.

Can we rent a house in Miami for a three-night consultation?

Only where the jurisdiction and building permit it. Inside the City of Miami, which includes Coconut Grove and Brickell, stays under 30 nights are lodging use and require licensing, which Villoura’s short-stay residences carry. Miami Beach single-family homes and all Coral Gables residences are not available for short stays; a licensed Grove residence or a hotel is the lawful route.

What should a recovery-ready residence have?

Level access, meaning a single-storey house, an elevator building or a ground-floor principal suite with a step-free bathroom; a separate suite for a caregiver or visiting nurse; a full kitchen for dietary requirements; genuine quiet; and a drive to the hospital entrance measured in minutes at the appointment hour. Questions about using a pool during recovery belong with the treating clinician.

Is a long treatment stay in Miami taxed like a hotel?

Florida’s Department of Revenue treats rentals of six months or less as transient accommodation, and Miami-Dade’s combined transient taxes add roughly 13 to 14 percent to the rate. A bona fide written lease of more than six months is exempt. Condominium screening is capped at $150 with a deposit of one month, and can take weeks, so start early.
